Jewelry Cleaning Precautions
Ultrasonic Jewelry Cleaners
Ultrasonic cleaners use high-frequency sound waves in the form of 'ultrasonic' 40 kHz vibrations, creating millions of microscopic bubbles in a liquid solution. This causes a 'cavitation' action in the liquid, working its way into hidden cavities and crevasses, to loosen dirt on every surface that the solution comes into contact with.
Ultrasonic cleaners are ideal for cleaning most metal jewelry, but care must be taken when using these cleaners on jewelry pieces that contain gemstones. Durable stones such as diamond, garnet, ruby, and sapphire typically can be cleaned in this way, but any stone that contains inclusions or feathers should not be cleaned in ultrasonic machines, as they could fracture. Additionally, any stone that has had "enhancement" treatments or fracture filling should not be cleaned in an ultrasonic cleaner, as the colorless filling-material used to improve clarity, could be removed.
Gemstones that may have been treated with wax, resin, or oil such as emerald, could be dulled or damaged in the cleaning process, as the filler material can leach out of any fractures leaving behind visible surface imperfections.
Ultrasonic cleaning should not be used on fragile gemstones that are susceptible to fracturing due to their internal crystal structure are emerald, peridot, tanzanite, and tourmaline.
Ultrasonic jewelry cleaners are definitely not recommended for soft materials such as amber, opal and pearls. Stones that are heavily included can be especially susceptible to fracturing, due to the presence of moisture that can be trapped within the fissure or crack.
Caution: Ultrasonic cleaners can loosen some settings, so care should be used with delicate jewelry containing intricate settings. Before using any ultrasonic or steam-cleaning device, you should consult with your jeweler.
Hot Water, Steam or Jewelry Cleaning Solutions
For cleaning jewelry that contains set gemstones, steam cleaners are a good alternative to ultrasonic cleaners, but care must still be taken. When cleaning any gemstone with hot liquid or steam, you should avoid sudden and/or extreme temperature change (thermal shock) which could fracture some gemstones. Cleaning jewelry in boiling water should be avoided, and you should never immerse aquamarine, emerald, tanzanite, topaz, tourmaline, or zircon in boiling liquid.
Pearls, amber, coral, and opal are a porous materials that can absorb liquids, so you should never immerse them in any cleaning solution.
You should never use a strong detergent, solvent or any kind of abrasive cleaner on pearls, amber or other soft materials because they will cloud, dull, or scratch the finish. There are specially formulated cleaning solutions for use on softer stones, but you should still use caution when cleaning. Solvents should be avoided when cleaning any oiled gemstone such as emerald, or dyed stones such as lapis lazuli or onyx.
Perfumes and hairspray can dull the finish of soft materials, so jewelry should be put on after these products are applied. Never mix cleaning solutions such as chlorine and ammonia, which can be lethal when combined.
Jewelry Polishing Cloth
It is best to clean amber, pearls or other softer materials with a soft, dry flannel polishing cloth. An untreated polishing cloth can be moistened with lukewarm water and/or a diluted solution of mild soap and water. There are also specialty cleaning cloths that come pre-treated with various cleaning solutions for specific applications. Always check with the manufacturer's recommendations BEFORE use.
