Gilera was founded by Giuseppe Gilera in 1909, beginning with the Gilera VT 317. Gilera built a groundbreaking four-cylinder 500cc lsr racing motorcycle in 1936, known as the "Rondine," which earned the land-speed-record in 1937 at 274.181 kph. The 500cc four-cylinder Gilera engine went on to win the world championship in 1950 and 1952. In total, Gilera earned six Manufacturer's Championship wins, three Tourist Trophies, Italian titles, and a total of forty-four international Grand Prix titles. The Gilera was sold to Piaggio Group in 1969, and is still in production today.
