In 1919, Alfieri Maserati founded Fabbrica Candele Accumulatori Maserati began as a spark plug manufacturer in Bologna, Italy. In 1953, Ida Orsi gained control of Fabbrica Candele Accumulatori Maserati (not affiliated with Maserati Automobiles), and purchased Italian motorcycle manufacturer Italmoto, which produced two-stroke 125cc to 160cc powered motorcycles. Maserati's first in-house motorcycle was the L/125/T2, based on the DKW design. Maserati motorcycles were offered in 50cc to 250cc models, and were discontinued in 1960, after the company faced bankruptcy.
