Suzuki GSX-R 1000 Superbike

Suzuki GSX-R 1000 Superbike

Suzuki first introduced the GSX-R 1000 (aka "Gixxer") in 2001, replacing the GSX-R1100 with a redesigned GSX-R750 engine that had its stroke increased by 13 mm, and its bore increased by 1mm, rounding out the displacement to 988 cc.

The GSX-R 1000's newly designed engine used pistons with reduced crown height, and gear-driven counter balancer to reduce vibration, and performance was increased to 160 bhp (120 kW) at 9,500 rpm.

The Gixxer's first upgrade came in September 2002, with the 2003 model year. Improvements for 03 included reduced weight, increased power and torque, better handling, and improved radially-mounted four-piston caliper brakes. To distinguish the 2003 from its predecessor, the alluminum frame and wheels were now painted black.

With its light (dry) weight of 374 lb (170 kg), the new GSX-R had a top speed of 182 mph (293 km/h), and finished the 1/4 mile in 10.3 seconds with a speed of 147 mph (237 km/h).

The next round of improvements came in 2005, with a redesigned frame and chassis that reduced overall length by 41 mm, and its wheelbase by 0.51 mm.

The 05's engine displacement was increased by 11 cc to 998.6 cc, and power output was also increased to 162.1 hp (120.9 kW) at 11,500 rpm. Torque was increased to 79.9 ft lbf (108.3 Nm) at 8,500 rpm. A slipper clutch was added, and front disk diameter was increased to 310 mm.

For 2008, the GSX-R 1000 features an updated 999cc engine with forged aluminum-alloy pistons, shotpeend chrome-moly connecting-rods, hollow camshafts, and a secondary balancer shaft for engine reduced vibration.
