In 1971, Gulf Stream founder James F. Shea started building prototypes for mobile-homes in an abandoned sauerkraut factory, right in the heart of horse and buggie country, in the Amish town of Nappanee, Indiana. With Shea's vision and drive, In a short time, his factory was producing 12 'Fairmont Homes' per day.
The Gulf Stream Coach company was officially established in 1983. James Shea's sons, Jim, Brian, and Dan Shea, took the driver's seat for the company in 1990, with each focusing on a different aspect of the business. Jim Shea worked on housing, Brian Shea delt with the motorized segment, and Dan Shea worked on the towable line.
Today, Gulfstream is housed in a state-of-the-art 700 acre RV facility, employing over 1500 people. Gulf Stream has always been an innovative company, developing the first hydraulic slideout system, two and three zone living spaces, and developing the use of extruded urethane adhesives to construct vacuum laminated walls for RV insulation.
The Gulf Stream company has enjoyed double-digit year-over-year growth throughout the 2000s, and they are the largest
privately-held full-line recreational vehicle manufacturer in the industry. Gulf Stream recently received a U.S. patent for their Atrium Sunroom slide-out, and Conquest Motorhomes, which is a division of Gulf Stream, partnered with International Chassis in 2006.
