Newell Company Background
Newell founder, L.K.Newell was the driving force behind the introduction and subsequent success of the rear engine motorhome and diesel-powered motorhome back in the early 1970's. After purchasing his new Streamline motorhome in 1967, L.K. Newell drove across the country to Streamline's El Monte, California factory with a list of improvements, and when he departed for his home in Oklahoma, he left with ownership of Streamline and Newell Custom Coaches was born. L.K. Newell built the first rear gas engine Newell Coach in 1969 using a Madson bus chassis.
The Newell coach of today incorporates aircraft fuselage construction technology to create a smooth, rivet-free aluminum body finish. Newell custom-builds their own welded steel truss type chassis so that the chassis and body are fabricated for a precise fit on their luxury bus conversions. Newall uses a Detroit Diesel Series 60, or Caterpillar C-15 engine mated to a six-speed Allison HD4060 transmission.
As part of their forward-looking, uber-luxury approach, Newell partnered with Porsche Engineering in 2006 to help redesign their line of custom luxury motorcoaches. New design features will include: sleek looking custom molded-chrome trim, high-performance, Xenon headlights, a large, one-piece windshield, and a distinctly European look. Newell coaches are very popular with NASCAR racers, comprising around 30% of their annual sales. A single Newell coach takes approximately four months to build, and prices start at $1,000,000+.
