There are so many CB radios on the market today that it is difficult to know which one to choose and if you've never used one before, why to even have one.
The Solution
CB radios are still one of the best forms of communication on the road today. All motorhomes and cross country travelers should have one for safety and to monitor road conditions in your vicinity. Installation and Operation
The installation should be done by a professional CB radio installer because not only is it important to get it hooked properly but the antenna needs to be tuned for optimum performance. The antenna that came with my coach reminded me of one of the old cell phone antennas that used to be attached to the rear window of cars. It was about one foot tall and was coiled in the middle and was billed as 'CB ready'. That antenna was completely insufficient and needed to be replaced with a 3 foot fiberglass wrapped whip antenna which required a larger threaded adapter to be fitted to the roof antenna attachment to be able to accept the proper size and threading of the whip antenna base.
Finally, the new antenna needed to be tuned to be able receive signals from a distance of about two miles. Additionally the antenna needs to be angled back towards the rear of the coach, so as not to exceed more than 2 feet vertically above the coach so as not to hit the underside of low bridges, etc. while driving. The antenna can usually be purchased from the CB radio installer. I would recommend the Firestik fiberglass antenna with a tunable tip.
The operation is quite simple once installation is complete. Turn it on and receive transmissions on whatever of the 40 channels is desired. I particularly like receiving the weather transmissions and alerts which are found by switching to any of the 7 NOAA stations that are broadcast in all 50 states.
