Girard G-5000 Automatic Slide-Out Awning System

RV Automatic Slide-Out Awning System

Girard RV Awning Overview

The Girard Awning Company has come out with a new innovative slide topper awning system that is mounted on the side of the coach nearly at roof level creating more pitch than any other slide out awning system in the industry. By both having the awning in a sleek housing and creating this pitch, the awning is no longer susceptible to standing water stretching the fabric or wind unraveling the awning during windy travel periods.

The Problem

Most of today's slide topper awnings that you see are mounted on the slide and attached to a channel on the side of the coach or trailer. When extended they roll out horizontally when the slide is opened. They then sit opened in a horizontal position allowing water to pool on top of them causing the fabric to stretch from the weight of the water over time. Also debris such as leaves, etc. stays on the slide topper and if soaked with water creates another mess which the owner must physically go on the roof to constantly police in order for the debris not to get caught on the awning when it is retracted.

The Solution

Girard has come up with a new system that addresses these issues. By attaching the slide topper awning system to the side of the coach at roof level and the other end in a box at the top of the slide (which is lower than the roof) the awning unfurls as the slide opens and sits at roughly a 40 degree angle. This allows water to naturally shed off of the awning.

Additionally there is a brushing mechanism attached to the bottom of the housing that sweeps debris off when retracted. Due to the mechanism inside the housing and the uniqueness of its operation, the awning is furled in a smoother tighter fashion than other products and the problem of billowing in transit is likewise eliminated.

Installation and Operation

If replacing existing awnings, there is hole filling and painting involved, therefore it should be done professionally. It might be able to be done by the do-ityourselfer, however I would suggest it be done professionally to ensure manufacturer responsibility of its product. The operation is like that of any other slide topper awning, that is when the slide is extended is likewise is extended and when the slide retracts it retracts. However it is held in place with a strong mechanism that will not allow its potential unfurling and billowing during travel.
