Parking - Hand Signaling Technique

Parking a Class A rig at a campground, RV park, rally or convention can be a tricky and sometimes stressful undertaking. This is especially true when both driver and parker (or spotter) are speaking a different "language". It is critically important to use clear, concise, and mutually understood hand signals because as the parker, you are essentially the driver's eyes and ears.

The FMCA offers a set of direction hand signals (below) that are THE universal language of motorcoach and tractor-trailer parkers or spotters. Both parker and driver should practice these hand gestures repeatedly before attempting to use them in a real-world situation. As the parker you should always avoid throwing new and "creative" hand gestures into the mix.

For the Driver:

These signals are usually given from the left rear of the coach. Never move the coach unless the parker is in plain view. When the parker needs to leave the preferred "high-visibility" left side of the coach to determine whether the other side of the rig is clearing, the STOP signal must be given. If at anytime you do not understand the hand signal or additional directions are needed, wave your hand out the drivers window signaling the parker to approach the driver for conversation.

For the Spotter/Parker:

The parker must possess a thorough understanding as to the degree of maneuverability of the coach. Additionaly, the parker must be able to visualize an imaginary path that the rear wheels will traverse, leading to the desired parking spot without hitting anything. Always be on the lookout for low-hanging tree limbs, overhead wires, utility connections, and sharp corners on walkways or patios. Always remain in the field of vision afforded by the drive's left side mirror. If you need to leave the "high-visibility" left side of the coach, give the driver the STOP signal first.
