LP Gas Filler Hose Adapter and Cap

LP Gas Filler Hose

LP Gas Filler Hose Adapter and Cap

A good item for all RVers to carry in their spare parts box is an LP Gas Filler Hose Adapter and Cap. This is an Acme product. The part number of the Filler Hose Adapter is 3179B and the product number for the cap is 3174-9P. These products are usually available from any local LP gas supply company.

The filler nozzle on your LP Gas tank has a check valve in it. The filler nozzle is a mass produced part and therefore occasionally is produced defectively, or like anything may fail with time and use. If defectively produced or over time, this check valve is subject to failure. Such failure may cause the check valve to get stuck on the interior wall of the nozzle in the open position and not shut off during the process of filling the tank. Should this occur, the LP gas that has just been filled into your tank will escape into the surrounding vicinity back through the fill nozzle. This is a costly and potentially dangerous event as LP gas is not only expensive but highly volatile and flammable and any spark in the area may have serious and potentially explosive consequences.

Warning: Always consult with a professional RV mechanic, your RV owner's manual, and/or your authorized RV dealer BEFORE conducting any maintenance repairs or safety inspections. Failure to follow your RV manufacturer's recommendations could result in injury or death. The maintenance recommendations on this page are meant as general guidelines only. LP Gas Spare Parts

It is a good idea to carry an LP Gas Filler Hose Adapter and Cap with you at all times and use it whenever you fill your tank with LP gas, in case there is a check valve failure. However if you don't use it when you fill, but have it with you, you will be able to save the tank of gas (that you just filled) should there be a check valve failure.

LP Gas Filler Hose Adapter

It is good practice to get into the habit of using an LP Gas Filler Hose Adapter whenever filling your tank with LP gas. Simply put your Filler Hose Adapter on your filler nozzle before the LP gas operator attaches the gas fill hose to your tank. It threads directly on to your existing filler nozzle that came with your LP gas tank. You can fill directly through the Filler Hose Adapter and when the tank is full you can remove the Filler Hose Adapter.

If there is no leak and the check valve has shut off, the Filler Hose Adapter can be removed without incident. If however, there is a leak caused by the check valve not closing and the gas is escaping from the fill nozzle (which you will notice when you start to remove the Filler Hose Adapter) simply leave the Filler Hose Adapter in place and put the cap on and you will save the gas that you have just put into the tank. The Filler Hose Adapter can then be left in place and can be removed the next time you fill the tank, at which time you can replace the defective fill nozzle once the LP gas tank is empty.
