Beijing, meaning "Northern capital," has been the on-again off-again political center of China for thousands of years. The city was formally called "Beiping" or "Northern Peace" during the Nationalist Kuomintang years which ended with the fall of Chiang Kai-shek in 1949. Although Beijing has maintained its Communist patina, its new market economy is rapidly approaching the economies of western countries.
