Gendaika Freestyle Ikebana

The modern or contemporary Gendaika or "Free-Style ikebana" form uses bold geometric arrangements in an upright nageire style vase, a shallow moribana style vase, or a combination of both moribana and nageire forms.

Flowers and twigs are arranged vertically or horizontally, and stress a relationship between line and mass. Flowers are held in place using a kenzan support, and can also be held in place using florist's wire, glass marbles, rocks or pebbles, and floral foam.

The Freestyle modern Ikebana movement was spearheaded by Teshigahara Sofu (1900-1979) who founded the Sogetsu school of ikebana. The Sogetsu school advances the notion of creative expression and experimentation.

Within the two basic forms governed by container shape, ikebana falls into six sub-forms based on the arrangement of the three lines. These forms are referred to as the curved line, geometric line, horizontal line, natural or random line, manipulated line, and vertical line arrangements.
